That is exactly why Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, announced that public transport for London would no longer run ads, which could cause body confidence issues. The subway, busses and trains will al be free from ads that may provoke this feeling. A good thing if you ask me. On the other hand is this not the solution for the problem. People will always get confronted with certain kinds of ads in the rest of the city, on the Internet and so on. Although this way not is the solution, it is a very good step in the right direction I think. Maybe Khan started a new trend and there are more countries to follow. We’ll see.
Advertisement, it seems to be everywhere these days: big billboards in the city, during Youtube video’s and while you are playing games at you smartphone. All the ads we see want to create some kind of feeling and provoke a certain kind of action. In some cases they have bad influences.
As you can see in the title of this post I am talking about advertisement that is perfect-body themed. For example ads that ask you if your body is already ‘summer-ready’. These kinds of ads want to make you uncertain about your body, so you buy their products or join their gym. Some people are more sensitive for these kinds of ads than others. Mostly youth can be very sensitive for these kinds of ads.
