So the knowledge about what we would want in the future, combined with future technology resulted in the Concept Kitchen 2025. The centre of this kitchen is, like it has always been, the kitchen table. From preparing your food to eating your dishes and even kids who want to play, everything is possible. The table advises you about the ingredients you put on the table, it heats where you place your pan and it tells you recipes you might like. Food waste can be used to grow your own herbs en garbage can easily be separated. Everything is totally thought through. But the question I ask myself is: Do we still make our own food in 2025? Do we even need a kitchen at all? If you look at concepts like Soylent (see: source) maybe we don’t. In the concept IKEA considered the possibility that we won’t be cooking as much as we do now and food delivery would get bigger. Check the website to see all the possibilities. I think it’s very cool that IKEA is innovating at this level, but I’m sure the Concept Kitchen 2025 will change a couple of times before it is actually 2025.
Already I posted a couple of thing about how companies are constantly innovating and are focussing on the future. That is exactly what we are doing at International Lifestyle Studies at the Academy for Creative Industries. What are the possible scenarios for the future and how can we anticipate to that?
IKEA is one of the biggest companies in the world when it comes to interior design. With 328 retail stores in 28 different countries all over the world and years of experience IKEA knows like no other what we, the people of the world, want in our home. So you can say that IKEA possesses very useful information. Information they are using to design our kitchen of the future. They combined their knowledge and collaborate with IDEO and design students School of Industrial Design at the Ingvar Kamprad Design Centre at Lund University, and the Industrial Design department at Eindhoven University of Technology.
